Line Canary and Dotcom-Monitor compared
These two tools sound similar and check very different things. Dotcom-Monitor monitors your VoIP infrastructure using SIP. Line Canary calls your number the way a customer would. Many teams would benefit from both.
| Line Canary | Dotcom-Monitor | |
|---|---|---|
| What gets tested | A real call placed to your public phone number from outside your network | SIP call flows simulated against your VoIP server using SIP credentials |
| Walks your phone menu | Yes, presses keys and speaks prompts | Not described on their VoIP monitoring pages |
| Recordings and transcripts | Every check is recorded and transcribed | Not described on their VoIP monitoring pages |
| Catches broken call forwarding | Yes, because the call goes through the same path a caller takes | A SIP-level check can pass while downstream routing is broken |
| Wider platform | Phone lines only | Website, API, server, and network monitoring alongside VoIP |
| Entry price | Free for 1 line daily; $29/month for 3 lines | Free plan listed for up to 25 targets; subscriptions listed from $13.33/month, with infrastructure monitoring listed from $40/month |

The difference that matters
Dotcom-Monitor connects to your VoIP server and checks that it registers and responds correctly. That is genuinely useful, and it catches infrastructure problems fast. But it tests the server, not the journey. If your PBX is healthy while a forwarding rule sends option 3 to a disconnected mobile number, a SIP check reports everything fine.
Line Canary starts from outside. It dials the number a customer would dial and follows the path a customer would follow, which is why it catches configuration failures rather than infrastructure failures. Most broken phone lines are broken because of configuration.
When Dotcom-Monitor is the better fit
If you run your own VoIP infrastructure and want protocol-level visibility, or you already use them for website and server monitoring and want phone checks on the same dashboard, Dotcom-Monitor makes sense. Their platform is far broader than Line Canary and has been around a long time.
When Line Canary is the better fit
If you do not control the phone system, which is true of almost every small business and every agency watching client numbers, there is no SIP server for you to point a monitor at. Calling the number from outside is the only check available to you, and it is also the check that matches what your customers experience. See phone line monitoring for how that works.
Questions
- Is Line Canary affiliated with Dotcom-Monitor?
- No. Dotcom-Monitor is an independent company. Details above come from their public website and may have changed since we checked.
- Should I use both?
- If you run your own VoIP infrastructure, the two answer different questions and do not overlap much. Protocol monitoring tells you the server is healthy; a test call tells you the caller got where they needed to go.
