Line Canary

Business phone line monitoring that listens like a caller

Your phone line can look fine on the carrier’s status page while callers hear a full voicemail box, a disconnected-number message, or silence. Line Canary places a real call on a schedule, records what it hears, and alerts you when the call goes wrong.

Problems a scheduled call catches

  • The line rings, but nobody can get through

A forwarding rule breaks after a carrier change, and every call lands in a voicemail box nobody checks. Nothing looks down, so nobody notices until a customer complains.

  • After-hours routing quietly fails

Night and weekend schedules are the easiest thing to misconfigure and the hardest to test, because the only people calling then are the ones who need you most.

  • You find out from a one-star review

Most small businesses learn their line is broken from a frustrated customer. A scheduled test call finds it first and texts whoever can fix it.

What should happen

After hours, pressing 1 should page the on-call plumber or offer a callback. It should never reach a full mailbox.

What Line Canary heard

Thank you for calling. Our office is closed. For emergency service, press 1. … The mailbox is full and cannot accept any messages. Goodbye.

Failingpressing 1 played a full-mailbox message instead of paging the on-call plumber.

What Line Canary checks on every call

Each check is a real outbound call from a Twilio number to yours. Line Canary waits for the line to answer, follows the steps you set, and records the call. The recording is transcribed and compared against what you said should happen.

  • Whether the call connected at all, or came back busy, unanswered, or out of service
  • How long the greeting took to start
  • Whether the words you require were spoken, like your business name
  • Whether the call ended where it should, judged by Claude against your plain-language description

Alerts that don’t cry wolf

Phone networks have bad minutes. You choose how many failed calls in a row it takes before anyone gets a text, and Line Canary sends one more message when the line recovers. If Line Canary itself has a problem, like a transcription outage, that call is marked separately and never triggers an alert.

Who it’s for

Line Canary is built for businesses where a missed call is a missed job: dental and medical offices, home services, restaurants, property managers, and the agencies and IT providers who set up their phone systems. If your line answers with a menu, see automated IVR testing; if an AI answers, see AI receptionist monitoring.

Questions

How is this different from uptime monitoring for my website?
Website monitors check that a server responds. A phone line can be technically up while callers hear the wrong message. Line Canary places a real call and checks what a caller would actually hear.
Will the test calls bother my staff?
If your line rings through to a person, each check will ring their phone. Most businesses point Line Canary at the automated greeting or menu and choose a schedule that suits them, from daily to every 15 minutes depending on plan.
Which numbers can I monitor?
US and Canadian numbers that you own or have the owner’s permission to test, including local and toll-free numbers.
How much does it cost?
There is a free plan for one line checked daily. Paid plans start at $29 a month for three lines checked as often as every four hours.
