Is my business phone line down? How to check
If customers say they can’t reach you, or calls have gone quiet, work through these checks in order. Most take a minute and point to the cause quickly.

Call it yourself from a different network
Call your business number from a mobile phone that isn’t on your business system. Listen to the whole call and write down exactly what you hear. The message tells you a lot:
- “Your call cannot be completed as dialed”: a carrier or routing problem, often after a number port or billing issue
- “The number you have reached is not in service”: the number may be disconnected or unassigned
- A fast busy signal: the network couldn’t route the call
- Ringing with no answer: calls arrive, but forwarding or ring groups aren’t reaching anyone
- “The mailbox is full”: calls arrive, but messages can’t be left
- Silence or dead air: often an internet or configuration problem on VoIP systems
Check your provider’s status and your account
Look for outage notices from your phone provider and your internet provider, since most business lines now run over the internet. Confirm the account is paid and the number is still assigned to it. Numbers can be released after failed payments or during a port.
Check recent changes
Think about what changed recently: new hours, a new menu option, a staff change that removed someone from a ring group, a new internet router, or a switch in providers. Changes are the most common cause of calls failing on a line that worked before.
Test from more than one carrier
Some failures only affect callers on certain networks. If a call from one mobile carrier works, try another carrier or a landline before deciding the line is fine.
Get alerted next time
The hard part of phone outages is noticing them. A scheduled test call finds a failure as soon as it happens, not when a customer finally reaches you another way. Line Canary’s phone line monitoring calls your number on a schedule, transcribes what it hears, and texts you when the call fails or sounds wrong. The free plan checks one line daily.
Questions
- Can I check if my business phone line is working without calling it?
- Provider dashboards can show whether the number is active, but only a real call shows what callers hear. That’s why automated monitoring places actual calls.
- Why do calls to my business go straight to voicemail?
- Common causes are call forwarding left on, a ring group with no available members, a do-not-disturb setting, or after-hours rules running at the wrong time.
